World TB Day is commemorated annually on March 24, signifying the anniversary of Dr. Robert Koch’s announcement in 1882 of his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). When he made his discovery, tuberculosis was responsible for one in every seven deaths globally, and Dr. Koch’s breakthrough was a pivotal advancement in understanding, diagnosing, and eventually treating the disease. This day serves as a chance to increase public awareness regarding the severe health, social, and economic consequences of TB, and to galvanize political and social commitment to hasten global efforts in eradicating the disease. Even though it is preventable and treatable, TB continues to be one of the leading causes of death from infectious diseases.
